Severe Weather Storm Tips

From the National Weather Service

As we’re facing active weather this afternoon, the National Weather Service has some tips on staying safe in severe weather.

In homes or small buildings, it’s recommended that you go to a basement or small interior room. Make sure you cover your head and stay away from windows. If you live in a mobile home you may want to head to a nearby shelter, a full list of those in the BRADD area can be found here.

If you’re in your car when a tornado warning is issued, the National Weather Service says not to try to outrun the tornado in your car. If you cannot reach a shelter and find yourself stuck inside your car, stay inside the vehicle and keep your seatbelt on. Put your head down below the windows and cover it with your hands.

To stay safe from lightning, turn off the TV and computer, using your cell phone for emergency updates only. Do not be directly on concrete floors or walls. If you’re outside and hear thunder, that means lighting can strike so stay away from anything metal, pools, or lakes, and avoid open spaces. Make sure you get indoors as quickly as possible.

In case of flash flooding, the National Weather Service says you should move to higher ground and stay away
from storm drains, ditches, and streams. If you’re driving and see a flooded roadway, make sure you turn around and seek an alternate route, as there’s no way to know how deep it could be.
