Several former Hilltoppers head to Tokyo to compete in Olympics

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – You may recognize a few names as a total of five former Western Kentucky University Hilltoppers are expected to compete in the Olympic games in Tokyo.

Jessica Ramsey will represent the United States in the shot put event. But she’s not the only one taking part.

WKU track and field alumni Michelle Finn, Gavin Smellie, Martin Owusu-Antwi have all made their respective Olympic track and field rosters and softball alum Larissa Franklin has made team Canada’s softball team ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics later this month.

Senior associate athletic director Zach Greenwell says this is a great indicator of the high-caliber athletes that represent WKU even after their collegiate days are done.

“It’s always exciting to see people excel at the top of their fields,” Greenwell explains, “We want to prepare (athletes) for the highest stages of their career, so obviously for these athletes, the Olympics is as high as it gets. It’s going to be really net to see the red towel there in Tokyo.”

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics are set to kick off with Opening Ceremonies taking place on July 23.
