Sentences of two former Hopkinsville daycare workers convicted of child abuse upheld
FRANKFORT, Ky. – Two former Hopkinsville daycare workers will continue to serve prison sentences.
Attorney General Russell Coleman announced that the prison sentences of Allison Simpson, 27, and Nina Morgan, 57, were upheld by the Kentucky Supreme Court on Friday.
Simpson and Morgan were employed at the United Methodist Church Daycare in Hopkinsville.
Child abuse committed by Simpson was first reported in 2018 by co-workers who notified the parents of the children. The parents reported the abuse to the Hopkinsville Police Department.
Simpson was a primary teacher at the daycare at the time of the abuse. Co-workers at the daycare told police Simpson would throw children down onto a bed or the floor. Simpson also patted infants’ backs excessively.
After reviewing thousands of hours of video footage from the daycare, police arrested Simpson and Morgan. Morgan is Simpson’s great-aunt.
Simpson received a 20-year sentence in 2022. Morgan received a 12-month sentence for her role in the child abuse crimes. The women were tried together.
Simpson and Morgan appealed their sentences and the admissibility of the parents’ testimony at trial.
The Kentucky Supreme Court agreed with the Commonwealth and upheld the sentences.
