Sections of downtown Glasgow parking garage to close for repairs

GLASGOW, Ky. – The City of Glasgow announced section closures of the downtown parking garage on Saturday.
In a release, the city states that following an evaluation of the downtown garage, it was determined that the structure is nearing its end of service phase.
The package garage was constructed in the 1980s.
Officials say they recognize the immediate need to make repairs to ensure safety.
The evaluation, conducted in May by Qk4 Engineering and Planning of Louisville, revealed several areas of concern.
The pedestrian walkway connecting to the public square, the elevator shaft, and the West entrance bridge off North Race Street are areas of concerns. The evaluation shows cracks, loose concrete on the ceiling of the first floor and prior concrete patching flaws.
Qk4 says the structure has a limited life expectancy.
Jim McGowan, Department of Public Works, stresses the importance of detailed inspections to prioritize the safety of the public and downtown structures near the garage.
Some areas of the structure will remain open. The City of Glasgow hopes that the closure of specific sections will expedite repairs and replacements to the downtown parking garage.
“With this closure, we can promptly focus on evaluating what can be repaired, what must be replaced, and determine the necessary actions moving forward,” says McGowan.
The City of Glasgow asks the public to contact McGowan at 270.651.5977 for information or inquiries.
