Sean Hogan receives U.S. Naval Academy appointment at senior assembly
BOWLING GREEN Ky.-January 17, 2020 was a memorable morning at Bowling Green High School, especially for senior Sean Hogan, who received a surprise appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy by U.S Congressman Brett Guthrie.
While at the academy, Hogan will be studying engineering.
“I’ve wanted to be an engineer for a while. This is one of the most prestigious engineering colleges in the country. On top of that, the opportunity to serve my country is definitely put on the top of the list for me,” Hogan said.
The U.S. Naval Academy is a federal service college in Annapolis Maryland. To get an appointment, an applicant must be nominated by an official source.
The announcement was made at a senior assembly, where Hogan was surrounded by his peers, teachers, and parents Brad and Michelle.
“It’s humbling. We’ve done this one other time before. He has an older brother up there. This last week has been kind of a whirlwind. We didn’t know it was going to happen this quickly, so here we are,” said Hogan’s father Brad.
“It started with the academics. With the math, science, engineering, and the opportunity that he could bring that to serve his country on whatever level that might be,” added Hogan’s mother Michelle.
A memorable moment for Hogan, but also a memorable moment for Guthrie.
“It’s one of my favorite things to do as a member of congress. One of the privileges you have is that you nominate people to attend the service academies,” Guthrie said.
Hogan called it an honor to be selected for the role to represent the school, the Commonwealth, and the Nation.
“It’s definitely a very humbling and honoring experience to know I’m one of the about 1,100 applicants that’s going to attend the united states naval academy this year,” Hogan said.
Each year, Guthrie along with the Kentucky Second District Academy Board, nominates a limited number of high achieving students to the army, navy, air force, and merchant marine academies.
