Scottsville City Council passes ordinance allowing managed natural landscapes

SCOTTSVILLE, Ky. – At the Scottsville City Council meeting Monday, an ordinance was passed affecting those who like to beautify their yards.

What this new ordinance means is that residents can maintain managed natural landscapes on their property, like meadows, prairies or rain gardens.

Previously, the city had what was called a weeds ordinance, saying if anything grew over one foot, it would be considered a nuisance.

Mayor David Burch says the reading was mainly to clear up any confusion, and he’s excited that this is now an option for citizens of Scottsville.

“There was a lot of confusion, a lot of miscommunication… and we brought it to the city council and refined the different definitions and clarifications… and the city council did the second reading tonight, so it’s now an ordinance. We’re really excited to be able to provide this for our local community,” Burch says.

During the meeting, longtime minister Ken Goforth was given a key to the city for his 48 years of service to the community at Scottsville Baptist Church.
