Saving your car from the winter weather

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -Although the snow and ice maybe melting away, it is still cold outside, and that can cause some wear and tear to your vehicle.

Snow, ice and even the salt on the roads can have an major impact if you are not up to date on vehicle maintenance. Salt especially can have a nasty effect, having a corrosive effect on the metal and undercarriage of your car.

One auto expert says knowing what to look for and keeping up on your maintenance can have a huge impact when paying for services at the register.

“It’s astronomical. It really is. I see people come in with head gasket blown and what have you. From not keeping an eye on their coolant and their houses and things that will cut thermostats, water pumps. There are a lot of things that you can fix for $400 or $500 that will end up costing you $3,000 or $4,000 for an engine or a head gasket job,” Huntsman Auto owner Brent Huntsman said.

Huntsman says bringing your car in to the shop for a check up saves people more money in the long run and can extend the life of the car as well. Keeping your eye on your coolant, hoses and belts is an important part to making sure your car gets through the winter unscathed.
