Safety tips for potentially dangerous temperatures and wind chills
WARREN COUNTY, Ky. – Bowling Green-Warren County Emergency Management wants to warn the public of upcoming temperatures and how to stay safe.
An impending winter weather threat late this week for south central Kentucky will bring a high probability of temperatures in the single digits with wind chill values below zero. In addition, there are possible snow accumulations.
As a result, the agency would like to share the following tips for cold weather safety:
- Ensure warm air is circulating to pipes to prevent freezing and bursting.
- Ensure generators are only used outdoors and have appropriately rated cords.
- Make sure pets have a constant water source that is accessible and never frozen if you
are unable to bring them indoors. - Check on neighbors and the elderly to ensure they are prepared for the low temperatures.
- Fill your car with gas and place blankets in the trunk.
- Insulate drafty windows and doors.
- Clean chimney flues.
There is also a potential for power outages with expected high winds. Be sure you have a secondary source of heat that is safe to use indoors, and only use generators outdoors.
