Russellville police warn public of social media scam

RUSSELLVILLE, Ky. – The Russellville Police Department is warning the community of a scam circulating on social media.

Police say a recent scam post states, “An identified woman was discovered in a submerged vehicle in Russellville. The police urgently need help identifying a woman who was found with numerous stab wounds in her car along the canal last night. She is in critical condition and is missing her ID/driver’s license, phone, and everything. Allow us to bump this post so it reaches her relatives. It takes only two seconds to share.”

The post includes photos of a woman in a hospital bed and police at the scene of a vehicle that is in a body of water but not submerged.

RPD says the post is not legitimate and the incident depicted did not happen in Russellville.

The department says the post should not be shared, and encourages the public to be cautious when sharing content on social media.
