Russellville Police Department plays kickball with elementary students

RUSSELLVILLE, Ky. – Police were on site at Stevenson Elementary Wednesday with reports of stealing, stealing bases that is.

Students at Stevenson Elementary ran the bases right playing kickball against the Russellville Police Department.

The game was students versus officers.

Wednesday was field day, a fun day outside full of games for students to enjoy right before summer break.

One student, LeGna Taylor, said the game was a lot of fun but when she first saw the badges and uniforms, it was a little scary.

Then, she scored a homerun.

“My teacher told me to, like, kick it softly so I could get more time running to the bases and basically that is all I really did, except just running fast and tagging the base. But usually the easiest part for me is I play softball and it’s pretty much easy for me,” said LeGna.

For one Russellville Police School Resource Officer, Randy Hargis, this was a great opportunity to bond with the children and show them that police are just regular people just like them.

“It’s been a blast. It’s so much fun to see them playing and having fun and laughing. And, you know, they see that we’re just people too. We’re just bigger than they are,” said Hargis.

Even with a size disadvantage, the students played their hardest and scored several homers.

“We play to win! We play to win,” said Hargis.

But Hargis said it doesn’t really matter who wins.

“Who knows. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter. It’s a win for everybody today out here,” said Hargis.

The last day of school for the students is Thursday.
