Replacement SNAP benefits request date extended to March 17

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Earlier this month Kentucky was hit by massive amounts of rain and destructive flooding that has taken the lives of 23 Kentuckians, destroyed road ways and have impacted homes long after the waters have receded.

Over 40,000 homes and businesses were left with out power. Some of those families living in those homes relied on snap benefits and may have lost food that would otherwise have to be replaced with food bought at an already expensive full price. However, the Team Kentucky cabinet for Health and Human Services is delivering some good news to those who rely on snap benefits to feed their families.

Team Kentucky shared a statement with news 40 saying:

“Team Kentucky believes that every person should have access to proper nutrition and be able to provide for their families, especially after a natural disaster. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) policy allows households who experience food loss because of power outage or damage from flooding to request replacement of those benefits within 10 days of the loss. SNAP rules allow states to request an extension of the 10-day timeframe with proper justification. ”

Kentucky has applied for and been granted an extra 10 day extension, meaning now Kentuckians who rely on snap will have until Monday, March 17 to request much needed replacement benefits.

If you need replacement benefits, Team Kentucky says you can call the Kentucky Department for Community Based Services at (855) 306-8959.
