Rep. Brett Guthrie honors South Warren student joining Merchant Marine Academy
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – A South Warren High School student is taking the next step in his future by joining the Merchant Marines, and Representative Brett Guthrie stopped by to honor his commitment.
Meyer Gable was honored by Representative Guthrie in the Veterans Courtyard at the Warren County Courthouse Wednesday afternoon. He explains why he decided to enroll:
“I chose this path going forward because I’ve always wanted to go into the military, but I’ve also always wanted to attend college, so once I found out about the academies, it was almost perfect for me to attend. The more I dug into it, I saw the Merchant Marine Academy was almost the perfect place for me,” Gable says.
He’s incredibly honored to have so many people out there supporting him.
“Working hard is kind of part of it, but to actually be here… everybody works hard, but to be here is… it’s almost unreal, and I really appreciate it. I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for everybody surrounding me: my coaches, my teachers, my friends, my parents,” Gable says.
However, he credits one program at South Warren that shaped him into the man he is today.
“The football program, it’s life changing at South Warren… Coach Smith and all the other coaches… it’s really developed all these students as young men. I really do appreciate that a lot,” Gable says.
Representative Guthrie says as a veteran himself, he’s honored to welcome Meyer into the force.
“I remember Meyer from several of the… at least two of our academy days and just been so proud of his effort and know how much he wants to do this. I just like being here because I’ve been through it. I know what it takes to go through it. I know what he’s about to go through… and it’s not college. It’s not a little bit of military and a lot of college or a lot of college and a little bit of military. It’s 100% military and 100% college at the same time. It’s like two full time jobs… but he’s ready. He’s absolutely ready for it and I’m proud of it,” Guthrie says.
