Remembering Mary Ann Tobin, founder of the Broadbent Wildlife Sanctuary

MEADE COUNTY, Ky.- The beloved founder of Broadbent Wildlife Sanctuary, Mary Ann Tobin, passed away on June 22, 2025, but her legacy will live on through the lives she touched, both human and animal.

Tobin founded the sanctuary in 2002, dedicating her life to rescuing and rehabilitating wildlife across Kentucky. Those who knew her say she was more than a mentor — she was a guiding light, a protector and a force for compassion.

Christy Hurt, a wildlife rehabber, described Tobin as “amazing,” saying, “What she did was monumental in the wildlife aspect of things in Kentucky. Losing our mentor — our rock — is a little rough.” Many described Tobin as brave, a bridge between animals and people, and someone whose presence is still felt across the sanctuary grounds.

“When people come here and drop off an animal, all they have to do is open their eyes and look around. And Mary Ann’s everywhere,” said one sanctuary member. The impact Miss Mary Ann had on people was limitless, and she also affected countless animals.

Manager Chloe Miller said, “She showed me it’s possible to make a difference in this world.”

Tobin’s mission doesn’t end with her passing — it continues with every life saved and every heart inspired by her example. If you’d like to donate in memory of Mary Ann Tobin, visit the Broadbent Wildlife Sanctuary website or Facebook page.
