Red Cross issues urgent call for blood and platelet donors
BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- The American Red Cross says it is facing an emergency when it comes to its blood supply.
The organization says 450 fewer blood drives were organized nationwide by businesses and other community groups last week due to the July 4 holiday, which led to about 17,000 fewer blood donations than needed for patients in a single week.
The Red Cross now has less than a three-day supply of most blood types available and less than a two-day supply of type O blood for patients.
The Red Cross has added about 8,000 additional blood drives over the next few weeks to accommodate more donors:
