Record spring rainfall brings surge in summer insects

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Due to the large amount of rain seen in the spring, experts say the summer will bring an explosion in insect activity.

From spiders to mosquitoes, homeowners can expect a significant increase in pests. Jimmy Blankenship, owner of Guarantee Pest Control, says the rise in the water table is already making spiders more prolific than in previous years.

The excessive rainfall left behind moisture, creating ideal conditions for insects to reproduce. Blankenship warns that mosquito populations are set to explode in the coming weeks as floodwaters continue to recede.

“All that moisture helps insects repopulate,” he says, “And once it gets hot and dry, they’ll try to move indoors.”

To prevent infestations, early action is crucial. Blankenship advises sealing entry points and treating outdoor areas before colonies can move inside. He explains that ant colonies, for example, will build nests inside walls if given the chance.

Stopping pests before they enter, he says, is the key to avoiding long-term problems.
