Recognizing the signs of child abuse during Child Abuse Prevention Month in Kentucky
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Earlier this week, we heard from child advocate group, Guardians of the Children, about the repercussions abuse has on a child’s psyche.
Here as we continue observing Child Abuse Prevention Month, it’s important to know how to recognize the signs of abuse.
Watch out for unexplained injuries or bruises, and sudden changes in behavior, or personality.
Trauma from sexual abuse often causes nightmares, and fear of certain people or places. Children who have been abused may also become more isolated or avoid physical contact.
Former pediatrics nurse and current Guardians of the Children member Jacob Barker said, “Unfortunately, you can’t reverse all of [the damage of child abuse]. So, those whose impacts do often last a lifetime. But, our goal is to get in as early as possible to prevent any further damage and to mitigate as much as we can.”
All adults in the state of Kentucky have a legal duty to report suspicions of child abuse.
Remember, reporting suspected abuse can help protect vulnerable children and provide them with the support they need. If you suspect a child is being abused, call 877-KYSAFE1
