Providing meals for students during summer

METCALFE COUNTY, Ky. – As the school year is almost wrapping up for counties across the Commonwealth, districts in south-central Kentucky prepare for meals during the summer months.

Metcalfe County Schools is offering food boxes for families and children in the area. Each order will have seven days worth of food, including juices, breakfast items, bread products and more.

Metcalfe County will be partnering with local farmers to provide fresh fruits and vegetables. Additionally, the district will collaborate with the local library for books.

Last year, Metcalfe County served over 700 families. Food service director in the area, Beth Miller, shares giving back to others in her hometown is heartwarming.

She says that the region is a “sense of family,” adding that “family takes care of each other.” Miller is hopeful to continue this tradition to show how much “we are about [students] not just when the school is in session.”

The program will start mid June all the way through August. Families can sign up every Monday, and pick-up times vary.

Miller encourages others to volunteer their time by packaging meals.
