Protecting yourself and your property from scammers amid the flooding

WARREN COUNTY, Ky. – With the rain clearing out and the floodwaters finally starting to crest, some are finding that their homes have been flooded and are looking to make repairs.

Floods, especially when they impact homes and businesses, can be extremely frustrating, especially for those just looking to move on from the damage. However, it is important to remember to do your research and protect yourself from scammers looking to take advantage of vulnerable homeowners.

The Bowling Green-Warren County Contractors Licensing Board says there are a few ways to protect yourself like doing your research, however, there is one way to ensure you stay as protected as possible.

“Always, always, always get a contract. Always, no matter who you’re working with. Even if they say, I’m going to come in, pump out your basement and it’ll cost you $500, write that down. Have them sign it, you sign it, date it, and when they’re going to be done in that way. If nothing else, you have it in writing and anything you have in writing will be enforceable. And you want to have a contract, especially with an estimated completion date. I cannot stress that enough,” said executive director of the Bowling Green-Warren County Contractors Licensing Board Holly Warren.
