Prevention and symptoms of West Nile Virus

BOWLING GREEN, KY.- West Nile virus is a mosquito-borne illness that continues to be a concern during the warmer months. According to health experts, common symptoms include fever, headaches behind the eyes, swollen glands, and sore throat.

Doctors say prevention is key—especially for anyone who has recently been bitten by mosquitoes.

“Usually with a mosquito bite, you will get a hive that itches,” said Dr. Patricia Tellez Watson, an infectious disease specialist. “But if, two to seven days later, you develop any symptoms, it’s important to contact your doctor.”

Dr. Watson stresses the importance of paying attention to changes in your health following a bite. She says that symptoms can vary widely from person to person. Health officials urge everyone to stay cautious and take steps to protect themselves from mosquito exposure.
