Potential wintry mix prompts KYTC to prepare in south-central Kentucky

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Kentucky Transportation Cabinet crews are preparing for potentially slick conditions overnight as a light wintry system moves into south-central Kentucky.

The National Weather Service expanded a winter weather advisory Monday to include several southern District 3 counties, including Warren, Simpson and Logan. KYTC officials say the forecast has shifted throughout the day, raising the chances for at least minor travel impacts.

KYTC District 3 spokesman Wes Watt said crews spent Monday pre-treating interstates and parkways and will monitor conditions around the clock.

“It may turn out to be a little more hazardous than we initially thought, but we’re prepared,” Watt said, noting that bridge decks and overpasses will be the first areas to freeze.

Watt urged drivers to slow down, give road crews extra space and stay aware of quickly changing conditions if snow or ice develops overnight. Motorists can track real-time roadway updates and treatment operations at the state’s winter weather portal, snowky.ky.gov.

Officials say they are not expecting major accumulations, but even a brief period of freezing precipitation could create dangerous spots before the morning commute.
