Popular ride-sharing app to give discounts for Election Day rides
Popular ride-sharing app Lyft is reminding Americans that a lack of transportation is not an excuse to skip voting.
The company is offering 50 percent off rides to the polling station on election day as part of its voting access program. The rideshare app says people without cars are less likely to vote. According to a report released Wednesday by Lyft, a one-mile increase in distance to a polling site can reduce voter turnout by 20 percent.
Lyft users can take advantage of the discount by preloading the code VOTE24 into their app up until November 5.
“Lyft believes transportation access should never be a barrier for any citizen seeking to vote,” Lyft Chief Policy Officer Jerry Golden said in a news release. Golden continued to say, “Our Voting Access Program reflects our commitment to being a force for good, and we’re proud to encourage riders and drivers to exercise their fundamental right to vote, regardless of income, zip code, or political affiliation.”
