Political science professor assesses politician’s re-election prospects

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – With the impeachment inquiry closed and President Trump acquitted, the focus turns to President Trump’s re-election campaign and how the impeachment trial and acquittal will weigh on his re-election chances.

Dr. Scott Lasley, a political science professor at Western Kentucky University said he expects a tight race overall as well as what he refers to as a “divisive” election between the two parties.

One of the main deciding factors will be who ends up being the nominee for the Democrats. But he also said a lot of people have likely already made up their minds about President Trump when it comes to casting their votes.

Lasley also believes Senator Mitch McConnell’s seat is probably safe this fall, but other senators, both Republican and Democrat, may face more backlash following the impeachment process.
