Pieces of Hope offers a gym for those with Parkinson’s, Dementia & Alzheimer’s
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – June is National Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, and one of the key ways to stay in touch is to keep physically active.
“One of the things we say is if it’s healthy for your heart, it’s healthy for your brain. The ten ways to love your brain… one of those is ‘Break a sweat.’ Engage in regular cardiovascular exercise that elevates your heart rate and increases blood flow to the brain and body, Brittany Bennett with the Greater Kentucky & Southern Indiana chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association says.
One local resident is giving those with Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and Dementia a piece of hope in their physical activity.
“My dad was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2006 and we found a program that actually kept him around a lot longer because of the movement. I just wanted to do something a little bit different along those lines, because with Pieces of Hope, we’re all a piece of making sure that people’s lives are good,” Jill Steffey, Owner and Founder of Pieces of Hope says.
With a background in special education, Jill is excited to help out in keeping those who have these diseases active.
“I have a heart for the underdog, so part of my stuff and part of my reasoning for this is because there’s nobody else out there doing it and I want to help,” Steffey says.
The main purpose of the gym is to help make sure everyone stays at their physical peak, even when they may be at their worst.
“With Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, Dementia, especially those three… you may get a little bit better, but you’re never going to get better enough to actually function, function function until the day you die. But I can prolong those days, I can make those days a little further away by what we do here,” Steffey says.
