Parks & Rec Departments to introduce adaptive water sports program
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – A pair of local Parks & Recreation departments are teaming up to put together a special sports program that will available to the community as soon as next month.
The Bowling Green and Warren County Parks & Recreation departments are partnering up to launch an adaptive water sports program so that those with physical disabilities can still take part in recreation and sport participation.
This special initiative has been made possible through the University of Kentucky’s “Wellness Edge” program, which has helped fund the idea over the past few years.
The city and county parks and recreation departments have not only worked together to make the access point on Drakes Creek at Phil Moore Park more accessible for those with physical disabilities, but also purchased various types of equipment that can be used for this adapted sports program.
Bowling Green Parks & Rec Special Programs Instructor, Cameron Levis, explains why this is so vital to the local community.
“The benefits of recreation, sport and leisure can not be lost on anybody in our community,” Levis said. “At the end of the day, we’re on a daily mission to ensure our entire community, every single person, is able to enjoy recreation, sport, leisure and that includes being in the outdoors.”
The adaptive sports program is set to begin on July 1. For more information on equipment reservations, community members can contact the Phil Moore Park office at 270-843-6665. Interested parties will need to call in advance in order to reserve a time to use the creek access and program.
