Overcoming the Holiday Blues

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The holiday season can be filled with many good moments, but the pressure of the season can cause depression.

Holiday blues, also known as seasonal affective disorder, can be caused by weather changes or family dynamics. The most common cause is social obligations and preparations for the holidays.

Last year, a survey conducted by the American Psychological Association found that 89% of American adults feel stressed during the holiday season. 41% reported higher stress levels compared to other times of the year.

It is crucial to be aware of symptoms and learn possible ways to cope.

Symptoms:

  • changes in emotion (often sadness or anger)
  • low energy or motivation
  • change in sleep patterns
  • poor eating habits (overeating or not eating enough)

Possible strategies to combate depression:

  • physical exercise (at least 1 hour per day)
  • establish a routines
  • practice self care and mindfulness
  • set social boundaires

Lee Fowlkes, certified therapist of over 30 years and Director of Clinical Operations at Alliance Counseling Associates, says that you are not alone in feeling this way. He goes on to say to show “compassion” to yourself and others. Fowlkes adds that to “recognize that a lot of people go through” and “that is okay.”
