LEXINGTON, Ky. – Rescuers are reminding pet owners of the importance of spaying and neutering after more than 50 cats were surrendered from a Lexington home.

According to a social media post by Lexington-Fayette Animal Care and Control, in late February, its animal control team picked up 53 cats and kittens after a surrender from a single home.

Animal care and control says the animals were taken in over the course of two days.

“Cases like this are heartbreaking — and preventable. This is exactly why spaying, neutering and responsible pet ownership are so important. One unaltered cat can quickly lead to dozens more, overwhelming families and shelters alike,” the organization stated.

Although International Cat Rescue Day was recognized Monday, March 2, the need for loving homes continues.
