Over 200 people gather to honor the fallen

BOWLING GREEN Ky.- Memorial Day honors those who have fallen while serving the United States.

At the American Legion Post 23 in Bowling Green, over 200 people came to honor the fallen warriors, including cold war veteran, Alan Stonex.

“I come to this every year. I think it’s very well done and most appropriate, and it puts us all together at one time,” Stonex said.

As everyone gathered, all participated in the singing of the national anthem, and listened as Taps was played which is a bugle call played at military funerals, and memorial services.

Vietnam veteran Malcolm Cherry, who played Taps, said he’s honored to attend to remember those who served and didn’t make it home.

“I’m here to remember the other people who didn’t make it home on Memorial Day. I lost a lot of friends in Vietnam, and so I want to always remember those as long as I live, and I want to pass that on to my son and grandson how to remember our veterans,” Cherry said.

Retired Corporal John Wade said being at this ceremony meant a lot to him, as he spent time with those who bravely fought for the country as well.

“I’m so glad to be here with my brother veterans and their spouses and children. It makes me feel warm inside my heart to see so many people that have served the country,” Wade said.

Remembering the sacrifices doesn’t stop at this ceremony. Wade said he will honor the warriors in his own special way.

“I’m going to salute the flag as soon as I leave here, in honor of those who served, and the ones who made it back and the ones who didn’t make it back. God bless them all,” Wade said
