Outdoor fitness court classes to take place Oct. 9 to Oct. 30

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – In the soccer complex on Lovers Lane, the Bowling Green Parks & Rec Department finished their Fitness Court some weeks ago and now is going to offer some classes in the coming weeks.

News 40 spoke to Frank Lamanna, fitness and wellness supervisor for BGPR, along with Caitlin Elmasri, an intern from Western Kentucky University working with BGPR, who are excited about bringing new programs to the community

Lamanna told News 40 that the benefit of a outdoor facility is just being outdoors for starters.

“People like being outside, especially after COVID, being cooped up made some people stir crazy…”

Lamanna said an outdoor space would be a great way to still get in some exercise time even if indoor facilities happen to shut down for some reason. He also said it could be a more convenient option for people’s time and their sensitivities. Lamanna spoke for those who might feel the most comfortable in the gym, saying “some people are health conscious and feel like in an inside facility, some people may be watching them. Here, there’s no judgement.”

Elmasri will be leading the classes – her first project as part of her internship for which she’s pretty excited.

“We’ll be going through all the exercises, 45 seconds on, 15 seconds off. We’ll do core, strength, agility, we even have a ‘special forces’ day that will be pretty interesting…”

Elmasri said she started to become more serious about her health and wellbeing during the lockdown of 2020 and said she felt after COVID, there was a societal shift on being out and healthy which she enjoys as an exercise science major.

Classes will be on Mondays and Wednesdays starting on Oct. 9 and will continue till Oct. 30. Lamanna said to text BGPR to keep up with the city’s events and such but also look to their social media for new updates.
