Organizations, schools, churches cancel events and gatherings to prevent spread of COVID-19

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Organizations, schools and churches all over south central Kentucky are cancelling or postponing events and gatherings.

It’s being done as a proactive effort to avoid spreading the coronavirus. Churches like Hillvue Heights won’t be hosting in person worship this Sunday. Some churches are going to live stream services instead. Hillvue Heights lead pastor Dr. Steve Ayers said the decision wasn’t an easy one.

“It was a hard decision because with this coronavirus situation, we’re in a fluid situation,” Ayers said.

A situation that keeps changing by the minute, causing organizations like churches to keep changing by the minute as well.

“It’s something that we have no choice but to deal with. We’re all in this together,” Ayers said.

From Bowling Green to Scottsville, the Center for Courageous Kids medical camp facility recently made the announcement to cancel the rest of the spring schedule. Director of community development Ed Collins said this decision was also difficult to make.

“The best way to describe it is that we’re all operating with a heavy heart. What we do is serve children. It’s not just a job that we do, it’s a passion that we have. When we came to this decision to cancel our retreats, it weighed heavily on all of us,” Collins said.

Collins said there’s a silver lining in this situation, in the fact that CCK has gotten emails and phone calls in support of them making the right decision given the circumstances.

“I have been touched to know that as difficult as it was to read that for some of them, families are accepting this decision. I know this doesn’t mean forever, it’s just right now,” Collins said.

At the end of the day, everyone agrees that there will be a celebration of the ages when the panic is over.

“The second that we’re open for business, everyone’s going to know about it because you’ll be able to hear us all the way in Bowling Green from here in Scottsville,” Collins said.
