Officials warn: Turn Around, Don’t Drown

GLASGOW, Ky. – Emergency management in Barren County was on call Tuesday to respond to any disaster or crisis that may occur throughout the day and into Wednesday as a result of the rain.

According to Barren County Emergency Manager Tracy Shirley, road crews were also set to put up blockades in flooded roads if the situation were to arise.

When it comes to flooding, one major reminder officials from all over were emphasizing is the importance of the phrase “Turn around, don’t drown”.

Shirley said he has been to calls where a car was swept away by water over the roadway and people have told him they thought it wasn’t moving or wasn’t deep enough to cause an issue.

These situations can quickly become deadly.

“Numerous times we have to get people out who are crossing where the barricades have been put up. They’re trying to cross, and they just don’t make it. And we’ve got them anywhere from just having to pull a vehicle out to having to rescue them out of trees and such, to where, people just don’t realize how dangerous it is,” said Shirley.

Shirley also said the Barren River Animal Welfare Association made preparations in case they flood again and need to evacuate the animals quickly like they had to back in May.
