Officials urge boaters to stay sober on the water

LUCAS, Ky. – With the 4th of July weekend starting, boating under the influence claims lives around this time every year.

Conservation Officer Bryan Hill from the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife says that in 2020, they recorded 46 fatalities from drowning and boating accidents. This year, that number is already at 29, and he’s scared the number will rise this weekend if boating safety isn’t practiced.

“Main things that we want to emphasize on talks is the importance, number one of wearing a life jacket. Life jacket save lives, and it’s been proven time and time again. And, the next thing is Making sure everyone has a sober operator, and he staying sober on the water,” said Hill.
