Norton Children’s pediatrician talks flu season preparation

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- Between October 2023 and January 2024, over 10,000 people tested positive for the flu, according to Norton Children’s Hospital.

The flu affects millions annually, and taking proactive steps like getting a flu shot and practicing proper hygiene can significantly improve public health.

We spoke with Dr. Kelly Kries, a pediatrician at Norton Children’s Medical Group in Bowling Green, who emphasized the importance of getting vaccinated before flu season begins.

“The most important thing is getting the flu shot prior to flu season so that you can be protected,” Kries said.

She highlighted that for high-risk groups—such as the very young and those over 65—the flu shot is especially crucial due to the higher risk of severe complications, including hospitalization and death.

Doctors advise everyone, regardless of age, to maintain distance from others if they are showing flu symptoms to help prevent the spread of the virus. By following these recommendations, we can all contribute to reducing the flu’s impact this season.
