Norton Children’s gives flu advice for children
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – With flu cases still being counted across the nation and the Commonwealth, a pediatrician at Norton Children’s in Louisville gave some advice on how best to handle a childhood case of the flu.
Dr. Amael Shalash says that it is best to try and treat the viral infection in the home and gives some signs to look for.
“Oftentimes, it’s fever ranging from 101 to 102, to body aches, cough congestion, headache, occasionally sore throat,” Shalash said.
Many people think that getting a regiment of antibiotics will take care of the flu, but unless illness is comorbid with some form of bacterial infection, an antibiotic will not do much at all.
“Not at all. Antibiotics are needed for anti-bacterial infections. Influenza is a viral infection, and so it does not work at all. Unless you have a complication like a secondary infection, then it’s helpful. But primarily, no,” Shalash said.
Treating the flu at home is a great way to save some money, but also can keep you and your family comfortable in your home.
“Oftentimes, Tylenol or ibuprofen and as needed for the body aches or fever. Honey, for cough, honey, it’s a great home remedy. It’s much better than a lot of the over-the-counter medications. There’s no side effects. It’s a very good cough suppressant. Lots and lots of fluids. A well-hydrated body helps fight off the illness,” Shalash said.
As always, the best way to determine if your child needs medical treatment is by talking to your doctor.
“They can always call their pediatrician and their pediatrician will be able to guide them to say, okay, come in or go straight to the E.R.,” Shalash said.
