New storm shelter, youth center combination in the works for Auburn

AUBURN, Ky. – In Logan County, a community is preparing for any storms that may pass through.

The City of Auburn received $600,000 in funding for a new storm shelter that will be adjacent to the Auburn Senior Center.

This new shelter also plans to serve some residential homes, senior apartments and the Auburn City Park, which are all within walking distance.

However, when there’s no bad weather to prepare for, city officials don’t want the building to sit unused, so they’re developing it as a youth center as well.

“We’re a growing city… we’re growing pretty rapidly, and we have a lot of youth here. With more moving in and having a youth center directly adjacent to the park and… to a lot of other amenities here in town really makes a lot of sense,” Mayor Mike Hughes says.

Mayor Hughes says he believes crews will break ground in around 3 to 4 months, and he’s excited for this new dual purpose building for the City of Auburn.
