New K9 officers in Southcentral Kentucky
SOUTHCENTRAL, KY.- A few police agencies are facing four-legged changes, and this new season brings Niko and Bronzon, two new K9 officers to the Glasgow and Bowling Green Police Departments and the two dual-purpose K9s that are ready to hit the ground running.
It’s a common misconception that when you think of police dogs, everyone conjures up these images of vicious killers and all, and they are like any other officer here.
Officer Johnathan Pendley Glasgow Police Department shares how becoming a member of the team is not where the significant change starts for officers and their k-9s. With the bond they’ve created, the partners depend on each other. Johnathan says, “The transition period was definitely different for me personally because of the fact that I went from just responding to calls and just doing my thing where my traffic stops are now out and talk to people and stuff like that to where now on top of all of that, I have to be able to make sure he stays up on his training and I stay up my training with him”
The canines were trained for hours on hours a day with the officers and this help strengthen their relationship.
After months of training, Officer Philmon Carpenter Master Police and K9 Officer shares how there is always more to learn. Carpenter says, “It’s a constant learning process. So because he’s dual purpose, I have to do 8 hours of training every month for the drug work, and I have to do 8 hours of training every month for the bike work in the apprehension.”
The Bowling Green Police Department encourages everyone, when you see them, say “hi.”
