New exhibit at Aviation Heritage Park to honor the Thunderbirds Air Force team

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The grand opening of a new exhibit at the Aviation Heritage Park took place this past weekend.

It’s themed after the Thunderbirds, specifically the 1977-78 team.

The Thunderbirds are the United States Air Force’s demonstration team, and two members of that specific team are from Bowling Green.

One of them, Matt Byrd, flew a plane over the city to celebrate the occasion.

We were able to speak to another, who didn’t live here much growing up, but knew he wanted to come back after retiring from service.

“It was a blessing to come back. I love retirement and I love participating in things like this. It’s a great way to give back to the community. I think all the work that’s been done here is really a testimony to the tradition of giving back,” Brigadier General Dan Cherry of the Thunderbirds says.

The exhibit is open now at the Aviation Heritage Park so stop by if you want to learn a little more about this historic team.
