BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WNKY) — The South Central Baptist Association (SCBA) will unveil a new mobile communications unit later this month designed to help restore cell and internet access when disasters knock traditional communication systems offline.

The ribbon-cutting for the unit, called “Chatterbox,” is set for 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, at the association’s office at 6448 Scottsville Road in Bowling Green.

Keeping communities connected after disasters

Chatterbox has independent cell and internet capabilities and uses technology including Starlink, according to the association. The unit is intended to provide another way for residents to reach emergency crews, relatives and others when normal communications are disrupted.

“When a natural disaster occurs, primary communication systems take a direct hit,” said Tom Witthuhn, South Central Baptist Association disaster relief coordinator. Chatterbox Press Release

The goal is to restore that connection as quickly as possible.

“The Chatterbox gets residents back online quickly so they can communicate with first responders, family members and other people who can help them,” Witthuhn said.

Unit believed to be first of its kind

The South Central Baptist Association says Chatterbox is believed to be the first communications unit of its kind in the United States.

The association represents 65 Southern Baptist churches across Allen, Edmonson, Grayson, Monroe, Muhlenberg, Simpson and Warren counties.

The Oct. 29 ribbon-cutting will include remarks from association leaders, Kentucky Baptist disaster relief leaders and local civic leaders.
