New BGFD system to alert drivers of emergency vehicles

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Bowling Green Fire Department announced its new warning system for drivers.

The department is using Safety Cloud by HAAS Alert. The software allows other drivers to receive automatic, real time alerts as first responders are approaching.

The software is linked to certain navigation apps, like Google Maps and Apple Maps. It can also be activated in in-dash systems among certain car brands, like newer models of Jeep and RAM vehicles.

The new addition is hopeful to reduce accidents and boost safety.

Public information officer with BGFD, Katie McKee, says it provides time for both first responders and other drivers. She believes that “seconds matter in emergencies.” McKee says this new feature will “keep our community and our first responders safe.”

As a reminder, the law requires drivers to pull over only when it is safe to do so, as an emergency vehicle is approaching.
