BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – June is the National Migraine and Headache Awareness, discussing potential causes and ways to help millions who struggle with them.

Migraines are a persistent, pounding headache that usually affects one side of the head. It is frequently accompanied by nausea and blurred vision.

Migraines are not a mental health disorder. The theme of MHAM in 2024 is Myth, Truth, and Action. There are common misconceptions regarding the causes and solutions of migraines or headaches.

Common myths would be that caffeine, chocolate, or light sensitivity cause migraines but there is no evidence to support that. Not taking medication, avoiding treatment early, or vomiting will not help persistent symptoms either.

Migraine remedies include:

  • Slowly drink a caffeinated beverage to help with early-stage pain
  • A cold or warm compress on your forehead or neck
  • Adequate sleep
  • Warm showers or baths
  • Turn off lighting near-by
  • Eat consistently

“One in 7 adults worldwide has migraine, and that it can be 3 times more common in women than men,” says The WHO.
