Multiple barns, sheds and trees destroyed during Thursday nights storms
BROWNSVILLE, Ky. – Storms ravaged a portion of the country last night and parts of south central Kentucky were damaged while under those severe threats.
Two Edmonson County families lost multiple barns and dozens of trees when what they described as straight-line winds ravished their properties.
The Doyles and the Johnsons watched as they say the air went white with hail and their barns were ripped apart.
Dorothy Doyle said it was unlike anything she has ever experienced.
“I thought, ‘Oh no! It’s going to knock that kitchen window out!’ I’ve lived here since 1973 when we built the house and I had never had rain and hail and wind hit that window that hard,” said Doyle.
Doyle said had it not been for a tree, the roof of her barn would have smashed into her home.
“I got down in front of the couch on the floor and I thought ‘Well, that’ll help protect me.’ It was just fierce. And then all of a sudden, I heard something go thump and the big pine tree in the front yard, which was humongously tall, had fell over and onto Louisville Road all the way across three lanes,” said Doyle.
In front of the Doyle’s home, a large tree fell onto the road and the fire department, with the help of a neighbor, got the tree cut up and moved to the yard.
“They said, ‘Was there a tornado or wind storm or what?’ And we said, ‘We don’t really know what it was.’ We didn’t have any warning or anything,” said Doyle.
Doyle and her husband are just thankful they and their animals all remained safe in the chaos.
Today, the families spent hours fixing fences, cutting up downed trees, and speaking to their insurance agents about repairs and cleanup.
