Mother accused of injuring four-month-old baby

GLASGOW, Ky.-A four-month old girl from Glasgow is in the hospital, and her mother is in jail after an incident left the child with life altering injuries.

According to an arrest citation 21-year-old Brittney Benigni admitted to shaking and hitting the baby multiple times and, in another incident, getting upset and yanking the child’s legs to flip her.

Medical records show that the child has been diagnosed with abusive head trauma and may lose her eyesight, according to the citation. She also faces other life altering injuries.

“Research shows that if there is trauma that occurs in the first year of life, that it is likely to have larger implications for that child lifelong,” said Heather Webb, clinical director at the Child Advocacy Center.

The mother told authorities that following the alleged attack on the four-month old, she put headphones on to drown out the child’s cries, according to her arrest citation.

“This four-month-old they’re crying because they needed something. It’s not because they’re trying to hurt the parent, be manipulative or be disobedient,” said Nicki Jones, executive director at the Family Enrichment Center.

Jones says parental support and education is one way to prevent child abuse.

This fall the Child Advocacy Center will start offering a caregiver trauma treatment group for parents who need education and support. Benigni is currently lodged in the Barren County Detention center on a $25,000 bond.
