Moss Middle School gets first middle school resource officer

BOWLING GREEN Ky. – For the first time, Moss Middle School will have a school resource officer. This is the third school resource officer hired for a Warren County middle school.

Warren County Deputy Sheriff Jamie Luttrell was recently named the school resource officer for Moss Middle School.  This position involves law enforcement working closely with the school system in order to keep the students safe throughout the day. Luttrell retired from the Bowling Green Police Department after a 20-year career there before taking a job with the Warren County sheriff’s office.  He’s now using his experience to work with children.

“I had cases working with children. After retirement, I decided to pursue a career back in law enforcement working directly with children in the schools as a school resource officer,” Luttrell said.

In addition to being a resource officer for the school, Luttrell is also looking to be someone the students can approach about issues outside of school as well.

“I hope I’m a role model for the kids, not only here at school, but if they have any problems going on at home, I’m hoping to be an additional resource where they can come and talk to me if they need additional assistance for anything going on at home,” Lutterell said.

This brings a new opportunity for people to see how law enforcement serves the community up close, and Warren County Sheriff Brett Hightower explains why this link is important.

“It’s a very important position because you’re building the future. A lot of times, people see law enforcement from afar, particularly those younger in age, and this is an opportunity for them to meet on a daily basis, get that face to face time and understand that law enforcement is here to help people, to build the experience, and to help bring the community together,” Hightower said.
