Morgantown City Hall renovates to become handicap accessible
MORGANTOWN, Ky. The City of Morgantown is in the process of major renovations at City Hall.
The city received a $237,000 federal grant and was allotted $130,000 from the city in order to make the building in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The major renovations include completely gutting the first floor, adding an elevator, widening hallways and expanding bathrooms in order to be wheelchair accessible.
The project officially began three years ago, but the actual offices were moved out in April.
It is expected to be completed in October and the office spaces filled once again in November.
The building has not seen any renovations since the 80’s except new wallpaper installed in 1994.
“We could have moved to a new location and saved money, so if we pulled out of Main Street, and that is Main Street America is where we are at,” said Morgantown Mayor, Billy Phelps.
Phelps is inviting all the previous mayors of Morgantown to attend the grand opening of the newly renovated City Hall where he will also be showing off a new clock located outside of the building.
“It’s kind of a nostalgic moment since that building has been there since the 1800’s,” said Phelps.
