MLK Celebrations kick off next week in Bowling Green

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Celebrations of Martin Luther King Jr. Day will start next week in Bowling Green, and preparations are currently underway.

Festivities will kick off on the 15th  … Dr. King’s birthday…and continue until the 20th . Mr. King was born in 1929…and was assassinated April 4th 1968. He was 39 years old.

A local planning committee is adopting the national theme for this year’s celebrations: “Dr. King’s 2020 Vision: The Beloved Community – The Fierce Urgency of Now.”

Plays, musical performances and a memorial breakfast will all be part of local commemorations.

“With everything that’s going on with us potentially going to war, there is a sense of urgency right now for our communities to pull together. For us all to come together to show some type of solidarity in the midst of what may seem like chaos. This is a better  season for us. That’s what we’re looking for is a much better season,” said Shannah Dixon, coordinator at the Bowling Green Martin Luther King Jr. Planning Committee.

A gospel performance will kick off the three days of celebrations Wednesday January 15th at 6 p.m. It’ll take place at Seventh Street Baptist Church in Bowling Green.
