MLB draft pick is new Barren County head baseball coach
GLASGOW, Ky.- Barren County High School has named Derrick Alfonso as the new head coach of Trojans baseball.
Born in Bowling Green, Alfonso is a Warren Central Dragon “Hall of Fame” baseball player, University of Louisville Cardinal player from 2005-2008, and a MLB draft pick for the Milwaukee Brewers. Tonight, the school is having a meet and greet for the players with the new coach at the baseball stadium.
The previous coach, Blake Crabtree, was there for three years before leaving for an occupation outside of education.
Warren Cunningham, Athletic Director for Barren County High School said he’s excited about Alfonso joining the team.
“We’re excited about hiring Derrick Alfonso as our head baseball coach. Obviously he brings a great wealth of knowledge. As far as baseball, his background as a player, as an instructor, as a coach, we’re really excited about the opportunity of having him work with our kids on our team and excited about where that can take us,” said Cunningham.
Practice for the baseball season starts February 15th of next year and the season begins mid-March.
