Middle school students get their gears turning with a new STEM lab
GLASGOW Ky.-The Glasgow Middle School Scotties now have more resources to bridge the gap between science, technology, engineering and math.
As of this year, Glasgow Middle School has received a new and improved STEM lab. Before this new space was available, the lab consisted of only the necessities. Now, the Scotties have more stations, new equipment and more tools for success. Lab instructor Tim Houchens said the new lab enhances the experience for the students.
“I love it. It just gives the kids in Glasgow Middle School an advantage to be able to have things that really align with the high school. Some of these things are what they’re going to see if they go to an engineering program at the high school,” Houchens said.
The students said the hands-on experience with the new gear is helpful in making the lessons stick.
“Glasgow gives us a good opportunity for building things and working with a group. Not most schools get to have that, so Glasgow gives us a very good opportunity to do that,” said seventh grader Emory Gardner.
Engineering can be rough when problems arise, but Houchens said problem solving leads to light bulb moments.
It’s a measure of dedication, and Houchens hopes the students will be amazing engineers as they keep their young minds sharp.
“I just want to see them excel, grow, and I can’t wait to see what they’re going to be like years later. I hope this class has a little bearing on that in some way or another,” Houchens said.
