Metcalfe county still has no confirmed cases of COVID-19

EDMONTON, Ky. – One county in our viewing area we still haven’t mentioned when providing these positive case numbers is Metcalfe county.

Metcalfe county, which has a population of around 10,000, has yet to have a confirmed case of the virus.

Metcalfe County is mostly farmland and has a population of just 39 people per square mile.

Metcalfe County Judge Executive Harold Stilts believes the spacing could be a part of the reason.

“We are a small county with a population around 10,000 and everybody is spaced out pretty good throughout the county and no real close,” said Stilts.

The county has conducted only 25 tests so far, all of which have come back negative.

“We’re just staying on guard and hoping that we have no cases but we’re sitting here with it all around us and thinking that at anytime that it could creep in,” said Stilts.

Yet, the Barren River District Health Department director, Matthew Hunt, believes there are certainly COVID-19 cases in all 120 counties in Kentucky, including Metcalfe county, since so few tests have been available statewide.

“COVID-19, the novel coronavirus is very real. We have seen the impact of this in some of our counties with deaths. So, I am confident there are COVID cases in Metcalfe County currently,” said Hunt.

With confirmed cases surround Metcalfe county, Hunt encourages residents to continue abiding by the CDC guidelines.

“We’ve made great progress when you compare Kentucky to other states but now is not the time to sort of get lax and to quit doing those things. We have to remain strong and press forward,” said Hunt.

The county has set up a help line for those who may not want to venture out into public.

Volunteers are dropping off essential items to peoples’ homes like groceries and medicine.
