Mental health advocates gather to help inmates

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- Dozens of Bowling Green city leaders, law enforcement officers and mental health advocates gathered at Hillview Heights church to discuss a new way to help people who are incarcerated and struggling with their mental health.

The topics that were discussed focused on how mental health-related illnesses are connected to most crimes, and how to give inmates resources and tools that will eliminate stress.

Jennifer Van Ort-Hazzard, a behavior health liaison tells us the cause of stress. She says, “So much of what I hear in therapy are things like ‘take your medicine and manage your stress’, but then you’re also working through this situation that is building on your stresses.”
