Med Center Health prepares for COVID-19 vaccine

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- As the date for a vaccine draws closer, Med Center Health is preparing how they will store the vaccine.

The vaccine that will most likely be approved first is the Pfizer vaccine, and it needs to be stored in ultra cold frozen storage- at negative 94 degrees Fahrenheit.

The Med Center had to invest in two freezers to keep the vaccine, and the freezers can only be opened twice a day for 60 seconds each time, according to instructions given by the FDA.

The FDA is meeting this Thursday to evaluate the Pfizer vaccine. The Med Center’s Caleb Benningfield says they need to be ready for anything at this point.

“We’re just trying to be as ready as we can be once that work comes because depending on how long the FDA takes to review the information. They could offer emergency use authorization of the Pfizer vaccine as soon as concluding that Thursday meeting or they may  take another advisement longer. No matter how quickly it moves we want to make sure that they’re ready,” said Benningfield.

The cold temperatures of the freezer keeps the vaccine usable for up to six months. At room temperature, it would expire after five days.
