Med Center Health discusses how to avoid microplastics
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – It’s something all around that you may not know you are eating.
Microplastics are small tiny fragments that are less than 5 millimeters in diameters. They can be found in almost anything, from seafood and snack packaging to even skincare.
Experts say making a simple switch can help avoid health risks.
They recommend trading plastic containers for glass, use wood cutting boards and to never microwave food in plastic dishes.
This can be quite intimidating for most. Registered dietitian and director at Med Center Health, Sarah Widener, offers some advice.
She says that you can “really go down a rabbit hole” of overthinking. Widener stresses that there is no possible way to “totally avoid” microplastics. She says to do your best to “do what you can and take one thing at a time.”
For a more cost-efficient method, Widener encourages others to save glass jars, like jams and pasta sauces, to use for food storage.
